Hi everyone,

Thinking this might be a good forum for discussing particular Peel-related things.

Basically, I'm looking for ideas on setting up some sort of online database for complete (as possible) information on Peel shows that become available, including tracklistings.

The subject has come up on the Yahoo Peel group recently with the "400 Box" digitization project.

Have had a go on the Peel Wiki (http://www.wikia.com/wiki/John_Peel), which seems pretty easy to use and might be suitable for this.

Wondered, though, if it maybe needs some reconfiguring -- like having a simple year index (something like the BBC Peel site). Am happy to have a go at this, but don't want to jump in headlong and wreck the thing.

Would also be cool to have some sort of standard "Form" for simple imputting of show info -- eg, dates, tracklistings (with columns for artist, track name, etc), comments, etc.

Haven't really messed around enough with it to get a handle on what might be possible.

Any other ideas? Or alternatives?

My experience is that using/updating wiki's is beyond the capabilities of 95% of "normal" web users (ie people who just read email, browse sites etc)

Just had a look at that link and it just looks like a load of adverts with a bit of text about John Peel interspersed! i wouldn't know where to start (and I work in IT!)

Thje wiki could be the best way of organising the ever growing archive and I agree that it needs a clear system of inputting.

Wikis are really easy once you get the hang of it.

Well, whether it's for the best or not, I decided to foolishly rush headlong into this thing.

What I've been doing since getting home this evening is try to set the basis for some sort of date-searchable database by imputting linked dates for 1967-2004.

(OK, I know things happened outside that period, but it's a start.)

Aim is that people can just search a date, click and write (or read!) something about the activities of JP on that day -- shows, tracklistings, whatever.

Think this will probably be useful for some sort of template or whatever in the end of the day.

Anyway, I've done the years (by month) and have so far finished months (by day) for January and February for all the years.

Very simple to do if you just check the format I've used for Jan and Feb 67-04 using the edit page function. Then it's just a matter of lots of copy and pasting and use of the "replace" function on any spare Word page lying around your computer.

Anyway, it gets much faster as you go on. I'm down to about 40 minutes a month (for 67-04) -- even for February, including all those tricky leap years.

Anyone who wants to join in, please feel free do do so. It's easy enough to see what months have already been done by whether the link is blue or red.

If you decide to do anything, could be good to post here what you've done or plan to do.

If the remaining 10 months aren't eagerly snapped up, I'll just bash on tomorrow.

JP used to say that he didn't mind tallying up the Festive Fifty because it was just a methodical thing and that was the way his mind worked.

OK, let's roll with that, as long as it's for a limited period. Seems like a bit of a foolish project, but shouldn't take long to do. Think it should prove useful in the end.

Incidentally, if anyone knows any brilliant shortcut that will just set the whole thing up on autopilot with a couple of commands, please feel free to go ahead and do it.

Sure there must be something like this and I'm just doing it the foolish old-fashioned way. It's definitely a bit Charles Dickens so far.

Just an update. Making decent progress on the dates and expect to have 1967-04 completed today (Fri) or tomorrow (Sat).

After that, could be good to go through the various articles up so far and standardize the date style and add links.

Then maybe stick up a link to the dates on the front page. Maybe one to the table of years is the most obvious.

Other ideas:

--add page (with front page link) to keep track of the "400 Box" project and get the shows indexed as they are digitized.

--on the indexing front, struck me a good to start might be a page listing shows on the 17 DVD torrent. Initially, these could just be linked to the relevant date (sessions, tracklistings, etc to be added when people get the urge).

--could then move on to similar for shows posted on Jon Horne's site, Fades In Slowly, Peel A Day, Peel newsgroup, etc. There may be some overlap, but don't see that's a problem.

The shows already highglighted on the Wiki are predominently from FiS, although they are generally my blog entries copied and pasted, hence a somewhat informal style. There are also some from Kat's Karavan.

To be honest, I think at this stage it's better if one person comes up with a definitive organisational plan and then the rest of us stick to it.

Having the years on the fron page seems like a good idea, and from that the years would then link to the months of that year which in turn would show dates of shows available and when sessiopns were recorded, aired.

Thanks for moving this along, Steve. It seemed like a good idea when I set it up but I've neglected it severely.

Cheers. It all seems to be moving on OK. I'll try and set a style and then unify the content that is already up. Don't think it should be a big problem. There isn't so much up yet.

Once the whole thing is rolling a bit, it should be a simple matter to follow the style that's already there.

Now I'm getting into this stuff, starting to get some ideas for keeping track of the "400 Box" and their contents. Don't think it should be too hard. Watch this space.

Give me something to do over the weekend anyway. It's too hot around here (Tokyo) at the moment to venture outdoor any more than the bare minimum necessary.

OK, date index is done. I put a link in the front news section, but might sort out something better for the front page in the next few days.

If you have a look, feel free to click on a date. Nearly every page (bar about three) is currently empty, but feel free to add tracklistings for the day's show or anything else that seems good.

Will try to get links in articles sorted over the weekend.

If anyone has the energy to start an Artist Index by letter, think that would be pretty handy for links from tracklistings.

Got to be honest and admit that I haven't contributed anything to the Wiki page, but I'm hoping to remedy that in the near future.

There was a bit of concern earlier on the newsgroup about lack of 93 to 98 shows - I've got at least 20 or 30 from these years stashed in the loft and it sounds like Duffpaddy and others have similar collections. Rather than duplicate any digitisations, it might be an idea to list these shows on the wiki (by date entry ) so that people have an idea of who might have the tapes/have already converted them. I'll have a go at listing and adding these to the wiki over the weekend, please feel free to amend any of my entries into any other different standard format

I've started digitising some shows (both wav and 192mp3) but I'd rather pass these on (by post) to somebody with more patience for uploading than me. Any volunteers could drop me a pm?

I'm just in the process of setting up a basic format for listings. Should be up in rough form a bit later today hopefully, but feel free to press ahead with listing up your shows in the meantime.

Should be easy enough to standardise everything at this stage as there's relatively few shows listed right now. Once it becomes too sprawling it's going to more difficult to change.

I've done a quick list of the 93-98 tapes mentioned earlier - I'll just add the dates of these to the wiki for now, filling in details as and when

most of these haven't been digitised yet, maybe ½ dozen have been passed around. I'll try and do a couple a week but ideally would prefer to send a regular dvd to someone with more torrent/rapidshare time and experience - please drop me a line if anyone interested

If you just fill in the dates (including sessions) on the wiki for the time being that would be a start, and I'll make a page to link them all together and maybe put that in the news section.

Have also done the first one to give you a kind of template.

If you go in the date (15 January 1993) on the page I made about your tapes and just press "Edit this page" you can then copy the layout and stuff for copying into the other dates.

Easy then to make whatever adjustments are needed (dates, sessions) and then save the page.
